Baskets and portafilters
Will any 58 mm bottomless portafilter fit my machine?
No. The basket size is only half of it; the locking ears must match your machine's group. Profitec, for example, calls the GO 2.0's group a ring brew group rather than an E61. Buy a variant named for your model; see bottomless portafilters by machine. More in Baskets and portafilters
Does a precision basket make better espresso?
It makes the basket itself more consistent: VST, for example, measures every hole and holds total open area within plus or minus 5%. Whether that shows in the cup depends on your grinder and recipe; we found no controlled taste comparison. More in Baskets and portafilters
Are more holes better in an espresso basket?
Not on their own. barista.tools, a barista-tools retailer, argues that hole count alone does not determine extraction yield or flavor and that there is no universally optimal number; hole size, spacing and open area work together. More in Baskets and portafilters
How much coffee should I put in my basket?
Use the basket maker's range. IMS lists 16 to 18 g of dark roast for its 24.5 mm-high 58 mm basket, rising to 24 to 26 g of light roast in the 28.5 mm version; Breville gives 18 g for the Bambino and 22 g for the Dual Boiler. More in Baskets and portafilters
Should I use a pressurized or a single-wall basket?
Breville's guide says to use single-wall baskets with freshly ground beans and dual-wall (pressurized) baskets with pre-ground coffee. More in Baskets and portafilters
Are VST baskets really measured?
VST says it measures 100% of the holes on every filter and holds total open area within plus or minus 5%. That is the maker's own statement; we have not seen an independent audit of it. More in Precision espresso baskets explained
IMS or VST: which should I buy?
Both publish the tamper size their baskets are made for: 58.40 mm for VST's 15 to 25 g baskets and 58/58.4 mm for IMS's 58 mm competition baskets. Choose by the dose range and tamper you need; we found no controlled comparison of the two. More in Precision espresso baskets explained
Do more holes mean better extraction?
Not by themselves. barista.tools argues that hole count alone does not determine extraction or flavor and that there is no universally optimal number; open area, hole size and spacing all play a part. That is an expert explanation, not a measurement. More in Precision espresso baskets explained
Is there a precision basket for Breville 54 mm machines?
Yes. IMS makes a dedicated 54 mm line for the Barista Express, Bambino, Pro and Touch, such as the B62.52TH24E: 54 mm inside, 24 mm high, for a 53/53.4 mm tamper. More in Precision espresso baskets explained
Does basket size change the dose?
Yes. IMS lists dose ranges that rise with basket height: its 24.5 mm B70 basket takes about 16 to 22.5 g depending on roast, and its 28.5 mm version 20 to 26 g. More in Precision espresso baskets explained
Does a bottomless portafilter make espresso taste better?
We found no evidence that it improves flavor by itself. Its main use is showing you how the shot flows, which helps you find prep problems that a spouted portafilter hides. More in Why does my bottomless portafilter spray?
Should I tamp harder to stop the spraying?
Probably not. In Socratic Coffee's controlled test, tamps from 5 to 20 kg gave no difference in extraction. A level tamp with a tamper that fills the basket matters more than force. More in Why does my bottomless portafilter spray?
Why does my shot spray only at the edge?
Common suspects are a tamper that is too small for the basket, which leaves an untamped ring, or grounds that are loose near the wall. Check your tamper against the basket maker's size, then stir the edges during WDT. More in Why does my bottomless portafilter spray?
Can a grind that is too fine cause spraying?
It can make flow uneven. Cameron et al. (2020) found that extraction yield peaks and then falls at very fine grind settings because water flows unevenly through the puck. If shots spurt at a very fine setting, try slightly coarser. More in Why does my bottomless portafilter spray?
Will an AliExpress bottomless portafilter fit my machine?
Only if it is made for your machine's locking ears, not just its diameter. See why a portafilter won't lock and bottomless portafilters by machine. More in Why does my bottomless portafilter spray?
Why won't my portafilter lock after I added a puck screen?
A screen adds its own thickness above the puck. If your dose already filled the basket, there may be no room left. Lower the dose a little or choose a thinner screen; see are puck screens worth it. More in Why won't my portafilter lock in?
Will any 58 mm bottomless portafilter fit my 58 mm machine?
No. Diameter describes the basket, not the locking ears. Profitec, for example, describes the GO 2.0's group as a ring brew group rather than an E61, so a portafilter sold for E61 machines is not automatically a match. More in Why won't my portafilter lock in?
How much coffee fits my basket?
Check the basket maker's range. IMS lists its 24.5 mm B70 basket for 16 to 18 g of dark roast and up to 20 to 22.5 g of light roast, with taller versions for larger doses. More in Why won't my portafilter lock in?
Does the Bambino use the same portafilter as the Barista Express?
Both are 54 mm, but Breville sells different spare parts: SP0027237 lists the Barista Express, Express Impress, Pro, Touch and Touch Impress, while SP0024799 lists only the Bambino Plus. Buy the part listed for your model number. More in Why won't my portafilter lock in?
Is it safe to force a stiff portafilter?
No. Find the cause first. The group is hot, a slip can end with a burn, and forcing the handle only hides the real problem. More in Why won't my portafilter lock in?
Will a 58 mm bottomless portafilter fit any 58 mm espresso machine?
No. The locking ears are a separate fit from the basket size. Profitec, for example, calls the GO 2.0's group a ring brew group rather than an E61. Order the variant named for your machine, and ask the seller if yours is not listed. More in Bottomless portafilters by machine
Which De'Longhi models does De'Longhi's own bottomless portafilter fit?
A retailer's listing for the 51 mm DLSC085 names La Specialista and Dedica Maestro models such as the EC9155, EC9335 and EC9665; the Dedica EC685 and EC885 are not on it. De'Longhi's own pages do not show the list. More in Bottomless portafilters by machine
Does the Bambino take the same portafilter as the Barista Express?
Both are 54 mm, but Breville sells them under different spare part numbers: SP0027237 for the Barista Express family and SP0024799, which lists only the Bambino Plus. Ask the seller before assuming one 54 mm variant fits both. More in Bottomless portafilters by machine
How do I know how many ears my portafilter has?
Look at the top rim of the portafilter you have now. The ears are the tabs that slide into the group head as you turn the handle; count them and order the variant with the same number. More in Bottomless portafilters by machine
Does a bottomless portafilter make better espresso?
We found no evidence that removing the spouts changes flavor by itself. Its value is visibility: you can watch the shot form and spot uneven flow, which points you to distribution or tamping problems. More in Bottomless portafilters by machine
Buying and safety
Are AliExpress orders under $800 duty-free in the US?
No. CBP says the de minimis exemption remains suspended for goods of $800 or less by all modes, including mail, and a February 2026 presidential action continued the suspension regardless of value. More in Buying and safety
Will I pay duty or tax on an AliExpress order in Canada?
Usually, if it is worth more than C$20. CBSA's relief for mail from any country, and for courier parcels from outside the US and Mexico, stops at C$20; above that, a mailed item owes any duty plus GST/HST and any PST on its full value. More in Buying and safety
Does "304 stainless" or "food grade" mean an accessory meets FDA rules?
Not on its own. The FDA says a food-contact item's regulatory status depends on each substance that could migrate into food under its intended use, so an alloy number or a label is a seller's claim, not proof. More in Buying and safety
Do all AliExpress products have free returns?
No. Free Return applies only to listings that show the Free Return label, for buyers AliExpress deems eligible, with a 15-day window after receipt and a limit of three uses a month. Items must come back unused, in their original packaging. More in Buying and safety
Does a UL or FCC mark mean the government tested the product?
No. OSHA says its recognition of a testing laboratory is not an endorsement of the equipment that lab certifies. An FCC ID relates to the rules for radio devices, not to food safety or accuracy. More in Buying and safety
Does AliExpress have free returns?
Only on listings with the Free Return label, for buyers AliExpress deems eligible. You can request a return within 15 calendar days of confirming receipt, and the item must be unused, with its original packaging. More in Buying espresso accessories on AliExpress: what to check
Are AliExpress orders under $800 duty-free in the US?
No. Duty-free de minimis treatment ended for all countries on August 29, 2025, and it remains suspended for goods of $800 or less arriving by any mode, including mail. More in Buying espresso accessories on AliExpress: what to check
Will Canadians pay tax on AliExpress orders?
Often, yes. Parcels from countries such as China are duty- and tax-free only up to C$20; above that, duty and GST/HST, plus any PST, apply to the full value. More in Buying espresso accessories on AliExpress: what to check
How many free returns can I use?
AliExpress's Free Return terms allow the free return shipping service at most three times per month, and they exclude very large orders. More in Buying espresso accessories on AliExpress: what to check
Does "for Breville" on a listing mean it fits my machine?
No. Breville makes both 54 mm and 58 mm machines, so match your exact model or tool size. See the basket and tamper size guide. More in Buying espresso accessories on AliExpress: what to check
Is "304 stainless steel" on a listing enough to trust a tool?
It is the seller's description, not proof of compliance. The FDA says a food-contact article's regulatory status depends on each substance that may migrate into food under its intended use. More in Are AliExpress espresso accessories safe?
Does an FCC ID mean an espresso scale is safe?
No. FCC equipment authorization concerns radio transmitters; we read it as applying to Bluetooth scales. An FCC ID is not a food-safety or quality mark. More in Are AliExpress espresso accessories safe?
Does a UL mark mean the government tested the product?
No. OSHA recognizes private testing laboratories such as UL, and says that recognition is not an endorsement of the equipment they certify. More in Are AliExpress espresso accessories safe?
Can I return an AliExpress item that turns out to be unsafe?
If the listing carries the Free Return label and AliExpress deems you eligible, you can request a return within 15 calendar days of confirming receipt; items must be unused, with original packaging. Without the label those terms do not apply, so check the listing's own return terms before you order. More in Are AliExpress espresso accessories safe?
Should I wash new espresso tools before using them?
Yes. Wash anything that touches coffee before first use, and check for burrs, loose parts or flaking coating. Follow the maker's care instructions: De'Longhi, for example, says its DLSC080 tamper is not dishwasher safe. More in Are AliExpress espresso accessories safe?
What should I buy first for a new espresso machine?
A scale. It lets you repeat a recipe by weight, and in Socratic Coffee's tamping test brew weight, not tamp force, drove the differences in strength (TDS). More in Beginner espresso accessory checklist
Do I need to replace the tamper that came with my machine?
Only if it does not fill your basket well or is hard to use level. Some machines ship with a plastic tamper, such as Gaggia's Classic E24 and Lelit's Anna. More in Beginner espresso accessory checklist
What size tamper does a Breville Bambino need?
Its portafilter is 54 mm, but precision-fit tampers for Breville's 54 mm baskets are about 53.3 mm: Normcore lists 53.3 mm for the Bambino and Bambino Plus. More in Beginner espresso accessory checklist
Should a beginner use a pressurized basket?
If you use pre-ground coffee, yes. Breville's Barista Express guide says to use dual-wall baskets with pre-ground coffee and single-wall baskets with freshly ground beans. More in Beginner espresso accessory checklist
Do I need a bottomless portafilter as a beginner?
No. It is a diagnostic tool that shows how the shot flows, and it can wait until your routine is steady. See why a bottomless portafilter sprays. More in Beginner espresso accessory checklist
Do I need a distributor if I already use WDT?
No. In Socratic Coffee's 2016 test, OCD-style spinning distributors lowered TDS and extraction compared with using no distributor. Keep one only if you like it and your shots taste right. More in Espresso accessories you don't need
Is a calibrated tamper a waste of money?
Not if you value consistency, but the force number itself is not special: tamps from 5 to 20 kg gave no TDS difference in Socratic Coffee's test. A level tamp with a well-fitting tamper is what matters. More in Espresso accessories you don't need
What is the most useful first accessory?
A scale. Weighing dose and output lets you repeat a recipe, and in Socratic Coffee's tamping experiment brew weight, not tamp force, drove the differences in TDS. More in Espresso accessories you don't need
Are puck screens a gimmick?
Not entirely: a screen keeps the shower screen cleaner, which follows from how it works. Claims that it fixes channeling or improves taste have no controlled evidence that we found; see are puck screens worth it. More in Espresso accessories you don't need
Is an RDT spray bottle worth buying?
Only if static bothers you. Socratic Coffee found no significant extraction difference with RDT. You can try the technique with a small mister you already own before buying a dedicated one. More in Espresso accessories you don't need
Cleaning and maintenance
How often should I backflush my espresso machine with cleaner?
Follow your manual. Profitec and ECM both suggest a backflush with cleaner after about 90 to 140 cups and warn that doing it too often strips grease from moving parts. Breville's Barista Express prompts you with a CLEAN ME light. More in Cleaning and maintenance
Is Cafiza a descaler?
No. Urnex says Cafiza removes coffee residue and oils from group heads, valves and lines, and its page does not mention scale. Breville also treats backflushing as separate from descaling. See Cafiza vs descaler. More in Cleaning and maintenance
How much Cafiza goes in the blind basket?
Urnex says up to half a teaspoon (3 g), then five cycles of 10 seconds on and 10 seconds off, a rinse, five more cycles without powder, and one espresso pulled and thrown away. More in Cleaning and maintenance
Can I soak my portafilter in espresso cleaner?
Urnex's soak for parts is 6 g of Cafiza per liter of hot water for 30 minutes, then a rinse, and it says not to submerge the portafilter's handle. More in Cleaning and maintenance
Can every espresso machine be backflushed?
Do not assume so. Backflush only if your manual describes it, with the blind basket or cleaning disc it specifies; Breville, Profitec and ECM each publish their own procedure. More in Cleaning and maintenance
Can I descale with Cafiza?
No. Urnex describes Cafiza as removing coffee residue and oils, and its page does not present it as a descaler. Use the descaler your machine's manual names. More in Cafiza vs descaler: which does what?
Can I backflush with descaler?
Only if your manual says so. Breville, for example, describes its back-flushing cleaning cycle as separate from descaling, and the two use different products. More in Cafiza vs descaler: which does what?
Are Breville cleaning tablets a descaler?
No. Breville's Barista Express guide uses one cleaning tablet with the cleaning disc for its back-flushing cleaning cycle, which it says is separate from descaling. More in Cafiza vs descaler: which does what?
Is Cafiza safe to use on parts that touch coffee?
Urnex says Cafiza is NSF and Kosher (pareve) certified. Rinse thoroughly, and after a backflush pull and discard one espresso, as Urnex directs. More in Cafiza vs descaler: which does what?
Can I use vinegar to descale my espresso machine?
Use the descaler and procedure in your machine's manual. We have no verified source on vinegar for espresso machines, so we do not recommend improvising with it. More in Cafiza vs descaler: which does what?
Can every espresso machine be backflushed?
No. Only backflush if your manual describes it. Breville, Profitec and ECM document it for the machines we checked; a blind basket in the box is a good sign, but the manual is the authority. More in How to backflush an espresso machine
How often should I backflush with detergent?
Follow your manual. Profitec's PRO 400 & JUMP manual and ECM's Classika PID manual both say about every 90 to 140 cups, and both warn that cleaning with detergent too often degreases moving parts. More in How to backflush an espresso machine
How much Cafiza do I use for a backflush?
Urnex says up to 1/2 teaspoon (3 g) in a blind filter for a backflush, and 6 g per liter of hot water when soaking parts. More in How to backflush an espresso machine
Is backflushing the same as descaling?
No. Backflushing clears coffee residue and oils from the group; descaling removes mineral scale from inside the machine. Breville's Barista Express guide says its back-flushing cleaning cycle is separate from descaling; see Cafiza vs descaler. More in How to backflush an espresso machine
Do I need to throw away a shot after cleaning?
Urnex's Cafiza instructions end with pulling an espresso to remove traces of cleaner and discarding it, so yes, after a detergent backflush. More in How to backflush an espresso machine
Distribution and WDT
Does WDT actually improve espresso?
We found no controlled extraction study of needle WDT. Its case is mechanical: needles break up clumps through the whole bed before you tamp. The one controlled study of spinning distributors we found showed that they lowered extraction compared with using no distributor. More in Distribution and WDT
Do I need a distributor if I already use a WDT tool?
No. A distributor only levels the surface, which a level tamp already does. If you use both, judge the result by taste and your scale rather than by how flat the puck looks. More in Distribution and WDT
What needle thickness is best for a WDT tool?
No source we checked establishes a best size. Normcore uses 0.25 mm needles in its WDT V2.1 and sells replacements in 0.25 and 0.3 mm. More in Distribution and WDT
Does a WDT tool have to match my basket size?
A handheld needle tool does not; it works in 51, 54 and 58 mm baskets alike. Rotary WDT tools and distributors that sit on the portafilter are sold by size, so order the variant for your machine. More in Distribution and WDT
Is RDT the same as WDT?
No. RDT means adding a little water to the beans before grinding, to cut static; WDT means stirring the grounds in the basket. See grinder accessories for what the RDT evidence shows. More in Distribution and WDT
Is a WDT tool better than a distributor?
For clumps, yes: needles reach through the whole bed, while a distributor only levels the top. In Socratic Coffee's test, OCD-style spinning distributors lowered extraction compared with using no distributor. More in Needle WDT tool vs three-slope distributor
Can I use a WDT tool and a distributor together?
Yes: needles first, then the distributor. Judge the combination by the shot, because the published distributor results were worse than using nothing. More in Needle WDT tool vs three-slope distributor
Does a distributor need to match my basket size?
Yes. It sits inside the basket, so buy the size for your basket family; the listing we track sells 51, 53 and 58 mm versions (the seller's sizing). A needle tool fits any basket. More in Needle WDT tool vs three-slope distributor
Did the published test include three-slope distributors?
No. Socratic Coffee tested the OCD and OCD 2. We treat the result as evidence about surface-only spinning tools in general, not proof about every design. More in Needle WDT tool vs three-slope distributor
Does WDT actually improve espresso?
It targets clumps and uneven density, which make water flow unevenly through the puck. We found no controlled extraction study of WDT that we could verify, so the benefit rests on that mechanism and on barista practice. A spinning surface distributor, by contrast, lowered extraction in a published Socratic Coffee test. More in What is WDT?
What needle size is best for a WDT tool?
No source we found establishes a best size. Normcore's V2.1 tool uses 0.25 mm needles and Normcore sells replacements in 0.25 and 0.3 mm, which shows the range makers work in. Fine, straight needles that reach the bottom of your basket matter more than a tenth of a millimeter. More in What is WDT?
Do I need a distributor as well as a WDT tool?
No. In Socratic Coffee's test, OCD-style spinning distributors lowered TDS and extraction compared with using no distributor. If you like a flat surface before tamping, judge the combination by the shot; our needle tool vs distributor comparison covers both. More in What is WDT?
How deep should the needles go?
All the way to the bottom of the basket. Clumps sit throughout the bed, so stirring only the top leaves the lower ones where they are. More in What is WDT?
Do I need a dosing funnel for WDT?
It helps a lot. Stirring flicks grounds over the rim, and a funnel sized to your portafilter keeps them in the basket. See how to choose a dosing funnel. More in What is WDT?
Should I buy a needle WDT tool or a rotary one?
Start with a needle tool: it works in any basket and has nothing to size. A rotary tool repeats the same stirring pattern each time, and the IKAPE adds a funnel, but it is sold per portafilter size. We found no controlled study comparing the two. More in Best WDT tools for espresso
What needle thickness is best for WDT?
No source we checked establishes a best size. Normcore uses 0.25 mm needles in its WDT V2.1 and sells replacements in 0.25 and 0.3 mm. Neither of our picks states its needle thickness. More in Best WDT tools for espresso
Do I still need a distributor after WDT?
No. In Socratic Coffee's 2016 comparison, two spinning distributors lowered extraction compared with using none. If you like a flat surface, a level tamp gives you one. More in Best WDT tools for espresso
Will a WDT tool fit my basket?
A handheld needle tool fits any basket. A rotary tool that sits on the portafilter has to match its size: the IKAPE V3 is sold in 51, 54 and 58 mm (the seller's sizing). More in Best WDT tools for espresso
Dosing funnels and cups
What size dosing funnel fits a Breville Barista Express?
A 54 mm funnel. Breville lists its own 54 mm funnel for the Barista Express, Express Impress, Pro, Touch and Touch Impress, and Normcore lists a 54 mm funnel for the Bambino models as well. More in Dosing funnels and cups
Why is the funnel 54 mm when the tamper is 53.3 mm?
A funnel sits on the portafilter rim, while a tamper has to fit inside the basket. Normcore's compatibility guide pairs exactly these two sizes for Breville's 54 mm machines. More in Dosing funnels and cups
Will a magnetic dosing funnel stay on my portafilter?
Only if the rim is a metal the magnets can grip. Profitec's magnetic 58 mm funnel lists no compatible machines, so hold a fridge magnet to your portafilter rim before you rely on one. More in Dosing funnels and cups
Do I need a funnel if I use a dosing cup?
Not for grinding, since the cup catches the grounds. A funnel still helps if you stir the grounds with a WDT tool once they are in the basket. More in Dosing funnels and cups
Does a smaller dose make weaker espresso?
Less than you might expect, in one study: at the same beverage volume, a 12 g dose gave bioactive compounds about 9% lower than a 14 g dose. The study measured chemistry, not taste, so let your palate decide. More in Dosing funnels and cups
What size dosing funnel fits a Breville Barista Express?
54 mm. Breville's own BEA201 dosing funnel is listed for the Barista Express, Express Impress, Barista Pro, Barista Touch and Touch Impress. More in How to choose a dosing funnel
Does a dosing funnel fit the Breville Bambino?
Normcore lists a 54 mm funnel for the Bambino and Bambino Plus. Breville's own BEA201 funnel list does not include the Bambino models, so check that a listing names yours. More in How to choose a dosing funnel
Will a magnetic funnel stick to my portafilter?
Only if the portafilter's top edge is a metal that holds a magnet. Try a fridge magnet on the rim of your portafilter before you buy a magnetic funnel. More in How to choose a dosing funnel
Is a dosing funnel the same as a dosing ring?
Yes. Sellers use both names for a collar that sits on top of the portafilter. A dosing cup is different: you grind into it, then pour the grounds into the basket. More in How to choose a dosing funnel
Do I need a funnel for WDT?
It helps. Stirring flicks grounds over the rim, and a funnel extends the wall so they stay in the basket. See what is WDT. More in How to choose a dosing funnel
Does a 54 mm dosing funnel fit the Breville Bambino?
Normcore lists a 54 mm funnel for the Bambino and Bambino Plus. Breville's own 54 mm funnel lists only the Barista Express, Express Impress, Pro, Touch and Touch Impress, so check that the funnel seats on your portafilter's rim. More in Best dosing funnels for 51, 54 and 58 mm portafilters
Why order a 54 mm funnel when my tamper is 53.3 mm?
A funnel sits on the portafilter rim, while a tamper has to fit inside the basket. Normcore pairs a 54 mm funnel with a 53.3 mm tamper for Breville's 54 mm machines. More in Best dosing funnels for 51, 54 and 58 mm portafilters
Do magnetic dosing funnels hold on every portafilter?
Only on a rim the magnets can grip. Profitec's magnetic 58 mm funnel, like ECM's 58 mm funnel, lists no compatible machines, so test your rim with a fridge magnet first. More in Best dosing funnels for 51, 54 and 58 mm portafilters
Can I use a dosing funnel with a WDT tool?
Yes; that is one of the main reasons to buy one. The funnel keeps the grounds in the basket while the needles stir. Our WDT tool shortlist has two options. More in Best dosing funnels for 51, 54 and 58 mm portafilters
Grinder accessories
Does RDT improve espresso extraction?
Not in Socratic Coffee's 2024 trial, which found no significant TDS difference and somewhat less consistent shot times. Socratic notes a 2023 paper that reported a possible gain in a very small sample (n = 3), so the evidence is mixed. More in Grinder accessories
Why use RDT at all, then?
It is meant to cut static, so fewer grounds cling to the grinder and the chute. That is a workflow fix, not a flavor upgrade, and you can see for yourself whether it works on your grinder. Check the grinder's manual before adding moisture. More in Grinder accessories
Does a finer grind always make stronger espresso?
No. Cameron and colleagues found that extraction yield peaks and then falls at very fine settings, because water flows unevenly through the puck, which also makes shots less repeatable. More in Grinder accessories
Do I need bellows or a single-dose hopper?
Only if one is made for your grinder model and retained grounds or swapping beans actually bother you. We found no controlled study measuring their effect on retention, extraction or taste. More in Grinder accessories
Does RDT increase extraction?
Not in Socratic Coffee's 2024 test, which found no significant difference in TDS with RDT. Socratic notes that a 2023 paper reported a possible gain in brew efficiency, but in a very small sample (n = 3). More in Does RDT work?
Why do people use RDT, then?
To cut static, so grounds cling less to the grinder and scatter less on the counter. That is its stated purpose; we found no controlled measurement of the static effect that we could verify. More in Does RDT work?
How much water should I use for RDT?
Very little: a single light mist, or a spoon handle dipped in water and stirred through the beans. No source we verified gives an optimal amount, so start small. More in Does RDT work?
Can RDT damage my grinder?
We have no verified evidence either way. Check your grinder's manual, keep water off the grinder itself, and do not use RDT if the manual warns against moisture. More in Does RDT work?
Does RDT make shot times less consistent?
Possibly. Socratic Coffee saw more shot-time variability with RDT; the pre-grind spritz was the most variable condition, a result just short of statistical significance (p = 0.0523). More in Does RDT work?
Puck screens
What size puck screen fits a Breville Bambino or Barista Express?
Normcore lists a 53.3 mm screen for the Bambino, Bambino Plus and the Barista Express, Pro and Touch. A 53.5 mm screen is slightly larger, so check that it drops in freely before you rely on it. More in Puck screens
Does a puck screen stop channeling?
We found no controlled study showing that. Channeling starts with uneven grounds and an uneven tamp, below the screen, which a screen on top does not change. Sort out distribution first. More in Puck screens
Do I need to change my dose when I add a puck screen?
Possibly. The screen takes up headspace. If the portafilter becomes harder to lock in, or the screen comes out with a deep imprint of the shower screen, lower the dose slightly or use a thinner screen. More in Puck screens
Is a 58.5 mm puck screen right for every 58 mm machine?
Not automatically. Normcore lists 58.5 mm for many 58 mm machines, but VST and IMS size their baskets for tampers of up to 58.4 mm, and Flair's standard basket narrows to 58.5 mm. Check that the screen drops in and lifts out freely. More in Puck screens
Is a puck screen the same as a paper filter?
No. A metal puck screen sits on top of the puck and is reused; a paper filter is a disposable disc placed above or below the coffee. We found no controlled study comparing the two. More in Puck screens
Does a puck screen stop channeling?
We found no controlled evidence that it does. Channeling starts with uneven grounds and tamping below the screen, so fix distribution first; see what is WDT. More in Are puck screens worth it?
What size puck screen fits a Breville?
About 53.3 mm for the 54 mm machines: Normcore lists a 53.3 mm screen for the Barista Express, Pro, Touch and Bambino models. More in Are puck screens worth it?
What size puck screen fits a 58 mm machine?
Normcore lists 58.5 mm for most 58 mm machines, including the Gaggia Classic, Rancilio Silvia and Breville Dual Boiler. Check that it drops in and lifts out freely in your basket. More in Are puck screens worth it?
Should I lower my dose when I use a puck screen?
Only if you run out of headspace. Lock the portafilter in without brewing and look for a deep shower-screen imprint on the screen; if you see one, reduce the dose slightly. More in Are puck screens worth it?
Thin or thick puck screen?
A thinner screen takes up less headspace. MHW-3BOMBER sells its screen in 0.2 and 0.8 mm versions (the seller's figures). We found no evidence that thickness changes taste. More in Are puck screens worth it?
What size puck screen should I order for a Breville Barista Express?
About 53.3 mm, the size Normcore lists for Breville's 54 mm machines. MHW-3BOMBER's 53.35 mm screen is the closer of our two picks; ALIKISSCAFE's 53.5 mm screen is slightly larger, so check that it drops in freely. More in Best puck screens for 51, 54 and 58 mm baskets
Should I choose a 0.2 mm or a 0.8 mm puck screen?
The 0.2 mm screen takes 0.6 mm less headspace (the seller's figures). Choose it if your dose already sits close to the shower screen; we found no evidence that either thickness extracts better. More in Best puck screens for 51, 54 and 58 mm baskets
Will a 58.5 mm puck screen fit my 58 mm basket?
Normcore lists 58.5 mm screens for many 58 mm machines, but baskets vary: VST and IMS size theirs for tampers of up to 58.4 mm. Check that the screen drops in and lifts out freely. More in Best puck screens for 51, 54 and 58 mm baskets
Do puck screens improve the taste of espresso?
We found no controlled study showing that. Their clear benefit is keeping coffee off the shower screen. See are puck screens worth it? for the details. More in Best puck screens for 51, 54 and 58 mm baskets
Scales and weighing
What does 0.1 g resolution mean on a coffee scale?
It is the smallest step the display shows. It does not tell you how accurate the scale is: Acaia's manual lists readability, repeatability and linearity as separate specifications. More in Scales and weighing
Do I really need a scale for espresso?
If you want repeatable shots, yes. In Socratic Coffee's tamping study, the weight of the brew drove the differences in strength (TDS), so weighing the shot controls a variable that matters. More in Scales and weighing
Can I use a kitchen scale for espresso?
Yes, if it reads in 0.1 g steps and fits on your drip tray. A scale that reads only whole grams hides changes smaller than 1 g, which is over 5% of the 18 g dose Breville gives for the Bambino. More in Scales and weighing
Is my espresso scale waterproof?
Only if its maker gives a rating. Acaia's Lunar manual gives none, lists error codes for water in the buttons and says to clean the scale with a soft cloth and warm water only. Wipe spills promptly. More in Scales and weighing
Does an FCC ID mean a Bluetooth scale is safe?
No. US rules require devices that intentionally emit radio signals to be certified before they are marketed; an FCC ID relates to that, not to food safety or accuracy. See buying and safety. More in Scales and weighing
Do I need a 0.01 g scale for espresso?
No. Makers' example doses run from about 16 to 22 g, so a 0.1 g step is around half a percent of the dose. A scale that repeats its readings matters more than a finer display. More in Espresso scale accuracy vs resolution
What does repeatability mean on a scale spec?
How closely the scale gives the same reading for the same load, time after time. Acaia's Lunar manual, for example, lists 0.1 g repeatability alongside 0.1 g readability. More in Espresso scale accuracy vs resolution
Is my espresso scale waterproof?
Only if its maker gives a water-resistance (IP) rating. Acaia's Lunar manual gives none and lists error codes for water in its buttons, so do not assume a coffee scale is waterproof. More in Espresso scale accuracy vs resolution
Does an FCC ID mean a scale is safe?
No. US rules require radio transmitters to be certified before they are marketed, which we read as covering Bluetooth scales. An FCC ID is not a food-safety or quality mark. More in Espresso scale accuracy vs resolution
Why weigh the shot as well as the dose?
Because output weight changes strength. In Socratic Coffee's tamping experiment, brew weight, not tamp force, drove the differences in TDS. More in Espresso scale accuracy vs resolution
Is 0.1 g resolution enough for espresso?
Yes for home use. At the 18 g dose Breville gives for the Bambino, one 0.1 g step is about half a percent. Remember that resolution is not accuracy: Acaia lists readability, repeatability and linearity separately. More in Best espresso scales with a timer and 0.1 g readout
Why weigh the shot instead of timing it?
Because the amount of espresso in the cup changes its strength. In Socratic Coffee's tamping study, brew weight, not tamp force, drove the differences in TDS. Time is still worth noting alongside weight, which is why both picks have a timer. More in Best espresso scales with a timer and 0.1 g readout
Are these espresso scales waterproof?
We found no water-resistance rating for either, so wipe spills promptly. Even Acaia's Lunar manual gives no rating and says to clean the scale with a soft cloth and warm water only. More in Best espresso scales with a timer and 0.1 g readout
Will the scale fit under my portafilter?
Measure two things first: the drip tray's width and depth, and the gap from the tray to the bottom of the portafilter with a cup in place. Then compare them with the dimensions on the listing. More in Best espresso scales with a timer and 0.1 g readout
What is a good espresso ratio to start with?
1:2 is a common starting point: Socratic Coffee used 20 g in and 40 g out in its tamping study, and Cafelat gives 16 g in and 32 g out as an example for its Robot. Adjust from there by taste. More in Espresso ratio calculator
Should I weigh the espresso or time the shot?
Weigh it, and note the time as well. In Socratic Coffee's tamping study, brew weight, not tamp force, drove the differences in strength (TDS). More in Espresso ratio calculator
What dose should I use?
Start with your basket's stated dose. Breville gives 18 g for the Bambino and Barista Express and 22 g for the Dual Boiler, and basket makers such as IMS publish a dose range for each basket. More in Espresso ratio calculator
What do ristretto and lungo mean in ratio terms?
A ristretto is a shorter, more concentrated shot and a lungo a longer one, but the names are used loosely. Go by the numbers instead: set your dose and the yield you want, and the calculator shows the ratio. More in Espresso ratio calculator
Tamping
What size tamper fits a Breville Barista Express or Bambino?
About 53.3 mm, even though Breville calls the portafilter 54 mm. Normcore lists a 53.3 mm tamper for the Barista Express, Pro, Touch, Bambino and Bambino Plus, and IMS gives 53 to 53.4 mm for its Breville basket. See Breville 54 mm machines. More in Tampers and tamping
Should I buy a 58 mm or a 58.5 mm tamper?
Go by your basket. VST specifies 58.40 mm for its baskets, IMS 58 to 58.4 mm, and Flair calls 58.5 mm the largest size for the Flair 58. Normcore lists 58.5 mm for many 58 mm machines, but Decent Espresso advises against it because a very close fit can lift the puck. More in Tampers and tamping
How hard should I tamp espresso?
Firmly and level, until the coffee stops compressing. Socratic Coffee found no significant TDS difference between tamps of 5, 10, 15 and 20 kg, so a press you can repeat matters more than a target number. More in how hard to tamp. More in Tampers and tamping
Is a calibrated tamper worth it?
Only if you want one variable fixed. A spring tamper makes every tamp end at the same force; there is no evidence that the force itself improves extraction. The number is a convention: Normcore offers 15, 25 and 30 lb springs for the same tamper. More in Tampers and tamping
Will a 51 mm tamper fit my De'Longhi Dedica?
De'Longhi says its 51 mm DLSC080 tamper fits all its manual espresso machine portafilters. If you have swapped in an aftermarket basket, use that basket maker's tamper size instead. More in Tampers and tamping
Is a 58.5 mm tamper better than a 58 mm one?
Not automatically. A closer fit leaves a thinner untamped edge, but VST, IMS, Flair and Profitec's PRO 400 manual all specify 58.4 mm, and Decent advises against 58.5 mm because a very close fit can lift the puck. More in 58 mm, 58.4 mm or 58.5 mm tamper?
Will a 58 mm tamper work in a 58 mm portafilter?
Yes. It is smaller than the 58.4 mm that basket makers specify, so it fits, and Rocket and Gaggia sell 58 mm tampers for their own machines. The trade-off is a slightly wider ring of untamped coffee at the edge. More in 58 mm, 58.4 mm or 58.5 mm tamper?
What size tamper fits a Breville Dual Boiler?
Its portafilter is 58 mm, and IMS serves it with B70 baskets that list a 58/58.4 mm tamper. Normcore lists 58.5 mm for it. Go by the basket you actually use. More in 58 mm, 58.4 mm or 58.5 mm tamper?
Why does Profitec list two different tamper sizes?
Its PRO 400 & JUMP manual recommends a 58.4 mm tamper, but its 58.5 mm walnut tamper is marketed for the JUMP among other machines. We report both; for those two machines the manual is the more specific document. More in 58 mm, 58.4 mm or 58.5 mm tamper?
Does the same rule apply to puck screens?
Mostly. A screen sits on the tamped puck and must drop in and lift out without binding. Normcore lists 58.5 mm screens for most 58 mm machines, so check that yours lies flat in your basket. More in 58 mm, 58.4 mm or 58.5 mm tamper?
Is a calibrated tamper worth it?
Worth it for consistency, not for the number. In Socratic Coffee's controlled test, tamps from 5 to 20 kg gave no difference in extraction (TDS), so the benefit is that each tamp matches the last. More in Calibrated, spring-loaded or impact tamper?
Which spring weight should I use in a spring-loaded tamper?
There is no proven best. Normcore ships its V4 with 15, 25 and 30 lb springs, Decent says coffee is fully compressed at about 15 lb, and Breville tells Barista Express owners to tamp with 15 kg. Pick one and keep it. More in Calibrated, spring-loaded or impact tamper?
What is an impact tamper?
A tamper with a spring mechanism that adds a quick final press at the end of the stroke. MHW-3BOMBER and IKAPE both sell them. We found no independent measurement comparing an impact press with a steady one. More in Calibrated, spring-loaded or impact tamper?
Does a self-leveling tamper fit every basket?
Only if its base suits your basket's inside diameter and its collar sits on your portafilter's rim with the base still reaching the coffee. Check the base size against your basket maker's figure in the basket and tamper size guide. More in Calibrated, spring-loaded or impact tamper?
Is the force on a 30 lb tamper accurate?
That figure is the seller's. We have not seen an independent check of any AliExpress tamper's spring force, and the number matters less than tamping the same way every time. More in Calibrated, spring-loaded or impact tamper?
How hard should I tamp espresso?
Until the coffee stops compressing. In Socratic Coffee's test, tamps of 5, 10, 15 and 20 kg gave no difference in TDS (p = 0.40), so a level, complete tamp matters more than any number. More in How hard should you tamp espresso?
Is 30 lb the right tamping pressure?
It is a common figure, not a proven one. Decent says coffee is fully compressed at about 15 lb, Breville tells Barista Express owners to tamp with 15 kg, and Profitec's PRO 400 manual says about 20 kg. More in How hard should you tamp espresso?
Should I tamp harder if my shot runs too fast?
Change the grind instead. Tamp force from 5 to 20 kg made no TDS difference in Socratic Coffee's test, while grind size changes how water moves through the puck. More in How hard should you tamp espresso?
Does a tilted tamp matter?
It can. A tilted tamp leaves one side of the puck thinner, and water takes the easier path. A self-leveling tamper helps if you struggle to tamp straight; see tamper types compared. More in How hard should you tamp espresso?
What tamper size do I need?
One that fills your basket: about 53.3 mm for Breville's 54 mm baskets and 58.4 mm for VST's 58 mm-class baskets. See the basket and tamper size guide. More in How hard should you tamp espresso?
What size tamper do I need for a 54 mm Breville?
About 53.3 mm for the Bambino, Barista Express, Pro and Touch: Normcore designs its 53.3 mm tamper for 54 mm baskets, and IMS lists 53/53.4 mm for its Breville basket. Tool fit for the Impress models is not confirmed. More in Espresso basket and tamper size guide
Is a 58 mm tamper right for a 58 mm portafilter?
It fits, but many 58 mm baskets are made for a slightly larger tamper: VST specifies 58.40 mm and IMS 58/58.4 mm. Normcore lists 58.5 mm, while Decent advises against 58.5 mm. Go by your basket; see 58 vs 58.5 mm tampers. More in Espresso basket and tamper size guide
What size tamper fits De'Longhi machines?
51 mm. De'Longhi says its 51 mm DLSC080 tamper fits all De'Longhi manual espresso machine portafilters. More in Espresso basket and tamper size guide
What tamper fits the Lelit Anna?
Lelit says the Anna uses its LELIT57 group and LELIT57 tools but publishes no diameter. Normcore lists a 57.5 mm tamper for it. Do not buy generic 58 mm tools for a LELIT57 machine. More in Espresso basket and tamper size guide
How do I measure my basket?
With digital calipers, across the inside of the clean basket at the depth where the coffee bed sits, not across the rolled rim. Baskets taper: Flair's standard basket is 58.7 mm at the top and 58.5 mm lower down. More in Espresso basket and tamper size guide
What tamper fits the Cafelat Robot?
Not a standard 58 mm-class tamper. Cafelat's Robot Professional basket is 57.8 mm inside and 60 mm deep, and Cafelat's own leveling tamper for it is about 57.4 mm. More in Espresso basket and tamper size guide
Which tamper size should I order for a Breville Barista Express?
The IKAPE 53.30 mm base or the ALIKISSCAFE 53 mm base. Normcore lists 53.3 mm tools for Breville's 54 mm machines, and IMS gives 53 to 53.4 mm for its Breville basket, so both sit in range; the IKAPE is the closer fit. More in Best espresso tampers for 51, 54 and 58 mm baskets
Is a 30 lb calibrated tamper better than a 15 lb one?
No evidence says so. Socratic Coffee found no significant TDS difference between 5 and 20 kg tamps, and Normcore sells 15, 25 and 30 lb springs for the same tamper. The point of a spring is repeatability, not the number. More in Best espresso tampers for 51, 54 and 58 mm baskets
Should I choose the 58 mm or the 58.5 mm base?
Go by your basket. Gaggia and Rocket supply 58 mm tampers, IMS lists 58 or 58.4 mm for its baskets and VST specifies 58.40 mm. Normcore lists 58.5 mm for many 58 mm machines, but Decent Espresso advises against 58.5 mm because a very close fit can lift the puck. More in Best espresso tampers for 51, 54 and 58 mm baskets
Flat or threaded tamper base?
Flat, unless you have a reason to prefer the threaded one. VST, for example, gives its 58.40 mm tamper size for a flat base, and we found no evidence that a threaded base extracts better. More in Best espresso tampers for 51, 54 and 58 mm baskets
Do these tampers fit a Lelit Anna or a Cafelat Robot?
No. Lelit specifies LELIT57 tools for the Anna, and Cafelat's own tamper for the Robot is about 57.4 mm. Neither listing sells those sizes. More in Best espresso tampers for 51, 54 and 58 mm baskets
Why does a 54 mm Breville need a 53.3 mm tamper?
Because the tamper has to fit inside the basket. Normcore designs its 53.3 mm tamper for Breville's 54 mm baskets, and IMS gives 53 to 53.4 mm for its Breville basket. More in Espresso machine size finder
What does "Not confirmed" mean in the size finder?
No maker page we could open states that figure, so we do not show one. Measure your basket instead, using the basket size guide. More in Espresso machine size finder
My machine is not in the list. What now?
Start from its family: Breville 54 mm, Breville 58 mm, De'Longhi 51 mm or commercial-size 58 mm. Then check for a brand stamp on the basket, or measure the inside of the basket where the coffee sits. More in Espresso machine size finder
Why do sources disagree on 58.4 mm and 58.5 mm tampers?
They are sizing for different baskets and products. Profitec's manual recommends 58.4 mm for the PRO 400, while Normcore, sizing its own tampers, lists 58.5 mm for the same machine; VST specifies 58.40 mm for its baskets. Prefer your basket maker's figure. More in Espresso machine size finder
Machines
Why does a Breville 54 mm portafilter take a 53.3 mm tamper?
A tamper has to slide into the basket, so it is made a little smaller than the basket's inside diameter. IMS's Breville baskets measure 54 mm inside and list a 53 or 53.4 mm tamper, and Normcore designs its 53.3 mm tamper for 54 mm baskets. More in Breville 54 mm machines
Do Bambino accessories fit the Barista Express?
Tool sizes match: Breville gives both a 54 mm portafilter, and Normcore lists the same 53.3 mm tamper and screen and 54 mm funnel for both. Spare portafilters differ, though: Breville lists SP0024799 for the Bambino Plus and SP0027237 for the Barista models. More in Breville 54 mm machines

No. Those two use a 58 mm portafilter, so they need 58 mm tools; see Breville 58 mm machines. More in Breville 54 mm machines
What size tamper fits the Breville Dual Boiler and Oracle Touch?
It depends on the basket. Normcore lists 58.5 mm for the Dual Boiler and Oracle, while IMS, which makes B70 baskets for the Dual Boiler, Oracle and Oracle Touch, lists a 58 or 58.4 mm tamper for them. More in Breville 58 mm machines
Do standard 58 mm baskets fit these Breville machines?

Does one bottomless portafilter fit every De'Longhi?
No. A retailer lists De'Longhi's 51 mm DLSC085 only for La Specialista and Dedica Maestro model codes, and the Dedica EC685 and EC885 are not on that list. Buy one whose listing names your model code; bottomless portafilters by machine lists the variants. More in De'Longhi 51 mm machines
What size puck screen fits a De'Longhi?
No maker source we checked gives one, and Normcore's sizing guide has no De'Longhi rows. Sellers offer 51 mm screens, but that is their sizing; measure your basket's inside diameter first, as the size guide explains. More in De'Longhi 51 mm machines
Should I buy a 58 mm or 58.5 mm tamper for a 58 mm machine?
It depends on the basket. Normcore sells 58.5 mm for most 58 mm machines, but VST specifies 58.40 mm for its baskets, IMS lists 58 or 58.4 mm, and Decent advises against 58.5 mm. The 58 vs 58.5 mm tamper guide goes through each source. More in Commercial-size 58 mm machines
Does any 58 mm bottomless portafilter fit any 58 mm machine?

Are the Flair 58 and Cafelat Robot 58 mm machines too?
They are 58 mm-class but have their own sizes. The Flair 58's basket tapers from 58.7 to 58.5 mm and Flair prefers a 58.4 mm tamper, while the Cafelat Robot's nominal 58 mm basket measures 57.8 mm inside. See the Flair 58 and Cafelat Robot pages. More in Commercial-size 58 mm machines
