Buying and safety

Buying espresso accessories from AliExpress in the US or Canada: the right variant, material and certification claims, returns, duties and taxes.

Short answer

Order the variant for your exact machine or basket size, read material and certification wording as the seller's claim, check whether the listing carries a Free Return label, and expect duties or taxes. US duty-free de minimis treatment remains suspended for goods of $800 or less,[1] and Canada's relief for parcels from countries such as China stops at C$20.[2]

Fit: the most common mistake

Most of the listings we recommend sell several sizes under one item, and "for Breville" is not a size: Breville makes 54 mm machines such as the Barista Express and 58 mm machines such as the Dual Boiler.[3][4] Even within a family there are exceptions. Normcore says its 53.3 mm dosing cup does not fit the Barista Express Impress.[5]

Find your sizes with the machine size finder, then check the selected variant again at checkout. The AliExpress buying checklist is a one-page version to use before you pay.

Materials and food contact

"304 stainless", "food grade" and "FDA approved" in a listing are the seller's statements. In the US, the FDA says a food-contact item's regulatory status depends on each substance that could migrate into food under its intended use,[6] so an alloy number or a "food grade" label does not establish compliance on its own. We report material claims and label them as the seller's.

Electrical items

Scales are the only powered items in our espresso picks, and two marks on them are often misread.

  • FCC ID. US rules require devices that intentionally emit radio signals to be certified before they are marketed or imported, with some exemptions.[7][8] We treat a Bluetooth scale as such a device. An FCC ID relates to radio rules, not to food safety or accuracy.
  • UL and other lab marks. OSHA says its recognition of a testing laboratory is not an endorsement of the equipment the laboratory certifies.[9] A lab mark means certification by that lab, not government approval.

Brands and stores

Several accessory brands sell through their own web stores as well as AliExpress. MHW-3BOMBER's own site sells WDT tools, tampers, funnels, puck screens, baskets and scales, and IKAPE's sells a similar range for 51, 54 and 58 mm portafilters.[10][11] We found nothing on those sites that confirms which AliExpress stores are authorized, so we name the store on every pick and say when a branded item comes from a reseller.

Returns

Free Return applies only to listings that show the Free Return label, for buyers AliExpress deems eligible. You can request a return within 15 calendar days of confirming receipt, or of AliExpress confirming it automatically.[12] The free return service can be used at most three times a month, and the item must be unused, with its original packaging.[12] The terms name no countries, so check the label on the listing and at checkout.

Import costs

United States. De minimis duty-free treatment ended for all countries on August 29, 2025, and remains suspended for goods of $800 or less by every mode, including mail.[1] A February 2026 presidential action continued the suspension regardless of value,[13] and since July 24, 2026 low-value international mail has been entered under a new postal informal entry process.[14] Do not assume any order arrives duty-free; the checkout price may not be the final cost.

Canada. Mail from any country, and courier parcels from outside the US and Mexico, are duty and tax free only up to C$20.[15] Above that, a mailed item owes any duty plus GST/HST and any PST on its full value.[16] The higher C$40 and C$150 levels apply only to qualifying courier shipments from the US or Mexico.[15]
