Buying espresso accessories on AliExpress: what to check

Pick the right size variant, read material claims as seller claims, check the Free Return label and plan for import costs in the US and Canada before you pay.

Short answer

Before you pay, confirm the size variant against your machine, read every material and fit claim as the seller's, check whether the listing carries AliExpress's Free Return label, and budget for import costs. Free Return gives eligible buyers 15 calendar days from confirmed receipt to request a return.[1] The US no longer allows duty-free de minimis entry, and Canada's relief for parcels from China stops at C$20.[2][3]

The short checklist

  1. Know your tool size before you open the listing. Use the basket and tamper size guide.
  2. Re-check the selected variant at checkout. A single listing often sells several sizes, such as 51, 53 and 58 mm, plus stands or bundles, under one item.
  3. Read material and fit claims as the seller's claims.
  4. Check for the Free Return label on the listing and at checkout.
  5. Expect import costs. Do not assume a low-value order arrives duty-free.

Size variants: the easiest mistake to make

"For Breville" is not a size. Breville makes both 54 mm and 58 mm machines: IMS, for example, serves the Barista Express, Bambino, Pro and Touch with 54 mm baskets, and the Oracle, Oracle Touch and Dual Boiler with 58 mm ones.[4]

Even within one family there are exceptions. Normcore says its 53.3 mm dosing cup, made for Breville's 54 mm baskets, is not compatible with the Barista Express Impress or similar models.[5] Match the exact model number where a listing names one, and the tool diameter where it does not.

Also check whether the variant is the tool itself or only an add-on. Some listings sell a stand, a knock box or a multipack under the same item as the tool. Our research pages mark stand-only and add-on variants separately, and their prices never describe the main product.

Material claims

"304 stainless", "food grade" and "FDA approved" in a listing title are seller statements. In the US, the FDA says a food-contact item's status depends on each substance that could migrate into food under its intended use, so an alloy number on its own does not establish compliance.[6] We report these claims and label them as the seller's. Our guide to whether AliExpress espresso accessories are safe covers what you can check yourself.

Brand matters as a starting point. MHW-3BOMBER and IKAPE run their own web stores, so you can compare a listing with the brand's own product range.[7][8] That does not prove a particular AliExpress store is the brand's own.

Returns: what the Free Return label covers

AliExpress's Free Return terms, in effect since November 1, 2022, set these rules:[1]

RuleWhat the terms say
Which itemsOnly products showing the Free Return label, for buyers AliExpress deems eligible
Time limitA return can be requested without giving a reason within 15 calendar days of you confirming receipt, or of the system confirming it automatically
ConditionUnused and undamaged, with original packaging, accessories, seals and labels
How oftenThe free return shipping service can be used at most three times per month
ExclusionsLarge orders (longest side over 120 cm, length plus width plus height over 210 cm, or over 30 kg) and some product categories

The terms name no countries, so check that the label appears on the listing and at checkout for your US or Canadian address. Not every listing carries it. For size-critical items like tampers and puck screens, inspect the parcel as soon as it arrives: the terms require unused items with seals and labels intact, so check what you can without using the item, and decide inside the 15-day window.

Import costs: United States

Duty-free de minimis treatment for low-value parcels ended for all countries on August 29, 2025.[9] CBP says it remains suspended for goods valued at $800 or less arriving by any mode, including the international postal network.[2]

A presidential action signed February 20, 2026 continued the suspension regardless of value, country of origin or mode of transportation, for goods entered from February 24, 2026.[10] Since July 24, 2026, international mail of this kind goes through a new postal informal entry process, generally for goods valued at $2,500 or less.[11]

What that means for you: the checkout price may not be the final cost. Duties and fees depend on the item, its classification and its origin, so check what the checkout page says about import charges before you pay.

Import costs: Canada

For parcels from countries outside the CUSMA trade agreement, such as China, Canada's duty and tax relief applies only up to C$20, whether the parcel comes by courier or by mail.[3] The higher C$40 tax and C$150 duty levels apply to qualifying courier shipments from the US or Mexico, not to typical AliExpress parcels.[12]

Above C$20, a mailed item owes any duty plus GST/HST, and any PST, on its full value, not just the amount over the threshold.[13]

Before you pay

  • The variant name shows your size, or your exact machine model.
  • The variant is the tool, not a stand or add-on.
  • You know whether the listing carries the Free Return label, and what its window is.
  • You have allowed for duties or taxes at your address.
