58 mm espresso machines: tamper, puck screen and funnel sizes
Gaggia, Rancilio, Lelit, Profitec and ECM machines take 58 mm-class tools. The right tamper depends on your basket, and bottomless fit on the group.

Short answer
Gaggia Classic, Rancilio Silvia, Lelit LELIT58, Profitec and ECM machines take 58 mm-class tools. Normcore lists a 58.5 mm tamper and puck screen and a 58 mm dosing funnel for all of them, but precision basket makers specify smaller tampers: VST 58.40 mm and IMS 58 or 58.4 mm, and Profitec recommends 58.4 mm for the PRO 400. Bottomless portafilters depend on the group, which differs by maker: ECM's E61-derived group, Lelit's LELIT58 and the ring group on Profitec's GO.
What they share
- Portafilter
- 58 mm[1][2][3]Rancilio and Gaggia state 58 mm. Lelit, ECM (for the Classika PID) and Profitec (for the GO) give no diameter in the pages we checked; Normcore lists all of these machines with 58 mm-class tools.
- Tamper size
- 58.4 or 58.5 mm, by basket[3][4][5][6][7]Sources disagree. Normcore lists 58.5 mm for these machines. VST specifies 58.40 mm for its baskets, IMS 58 or 58.4 mm for its B70 baskets, and Profitec 58.4 mm for the PRO 400. Decent advises against 58.5 mm tampers because a very close fit can lift the puck.
- Puck screen size
- 58.5 mm[3]Normcore's size for its own screens on these machines.
- Dosing funnel
- 58 mm[3][8][9]Normcore lists 58 mm; ECM and Profitec also sell 58 mm funnels, without model lists. Magnetic funnels also depend on the portafilter's material.
Watch out for
- Choose the tamper by basket. A 58.5 mm tamper exceeds VST's 58.40 mm spec (+0.00/-0.05) and IMS's 58 or 58.4 mm, so it suits some baskets and not others.
- Size labels are nominal. Gaggia lists its wooden-handle filter-holder at 58 mm, its bottomless filter-holder at 59 mm and the IMS filter bundled with it at 70 mm.
- Do not assume an E61 bottomless portafilter fits every 58 mm machine: Profitec calls the GO's group a ring brew group, and Lelit makes LELIT58 filterholders for its own group.
- Follow your manual for cleaning. Profitec and ECM both say to clean the group with a blind filter and cleaner after about 90-140 cups, and warn that doing it too often degreases moving parts.

Questions
Should I buy a 58 mm or 58.5 mm tamper for a 58 mm machine?
It depends on the basket. Normcore sells 58.5 mm for most 58 mm machines, but VST specifies 58.40 mm for its baskets, IMS lists 58 or 58.4 mm, and Decent advises against 58.5 mm. The 58 vs 58.5 mm tamper guide goes through each source.[3][4][5][7]
Does any 58 mm bottomless portafilter fit any 58 mm machine?
No. The group and the portafilter's locking ears decide fit, not the basket diameter. Profitec calls the GO's group a ring brew group rather than an E61, and sellers offer separate versions for E61 and Gaggia machines.[12]
Are the Flair 58 and Cafelat Robot 58 mm machines too?
They are 58 mm-class but have their own sizes. The Flair 58's basket tapers from 58.7 to 58.5 mm and Flair prefers a 58.4 mm tamper, while the Cafelat Robot's nominal 58 mm basket measures 57.8 mm inside. See the Flair 58 and Cafelat Robot pages.[14][15]
