Choose the WDT tool for clumpy grounds
Needles reach through the whole bed and break up clumps, and it works with any basket size.
Limitation: Takes a few seconds of stirring each shot; generic tool with unstated needle size.
Choose the distributor for a fast, flat surface
A quick spin levels the top of the bed at a set depth.
Limitation: Mostly levels the surface rather than breaking up clumps below it; sized to one basket family.
How they differ
A needle tool stirs through the full depth of the coffee, which is why it is the usual answer to clumping. A three-slope distributor sits on top and levels the surface with a twist. Some baristas use both: needles first, then the distributor.
