Puck screens
A puck screen keeps the shower screen cleaner; taste and channeling claims are unproven. How to size one for your basket and when to skip it.
Short answer
A puck screen is a thin perforated disc that sits on the tamped coffee. Its clear benefit is a cleaner shower screen; we found no controlled study showing that it fixes channeling or improves taste. Size it like a tamper, to the inside of the basket: Normcore lists 53.3 mm screens for Breville's 54 mm machines and 58.5 mm for many 58 mm machines.[1]
What a puck screen does
The screen sits between the coffee and the machine's shower screen. Water passes through it before reaching the puck, and the wet coffee never touches the shower screen, which is why the group head stays cleaner.
| Claim | What we found |
|---|---|
| Keeps the shower screen cleaner | Follows from where the screen sits |
| Spreads water more evenly over the puck | Plausible, but we found no controlled measurements |
| Fixes channeling | Not shown. Channeling starts with uneven grounds and tamping, below the screen |
| Improves taste or extraction | Not shown |
Sizing
A screen has to drop onto the coffee without binding, so it follows the basket's inside diameter, not the portafilter label.
| Machine family | Screen size Normcore lists |
|---|---|
| Breville 54 mm (Bambino, Barista Express, Pro, Touch) | 53.3 mm[1] |
| Breville Dual Boiler and Oracle | 58.5 mm[1] |
| Gaggia Classic, Rancilio Silvia, Lelit 58 mm and E61 machines | 58.5 mm[1] |
| Lelit Anna | 57 mm, a Normcore figure; Lelit publishes no diameter[1][2] |
| Flair PRO 2 | 45.5 mm[1] |
Normcore's guide has no De'Longhi sizes,[1] so for those machines measure the basket, or use the size its maker gives.
Two checks matter more than the label. Baskets can taper: Flair's standard basket is 58.7 mm at the top and 58.5 mm lower down,[3] so judge a screen where it comes to rest, not at the rim. And the precision baskets from VST and IMS are sized for tampers of up to 58.4 mm,[4][5] so try a 58.5 mm screen in yours before you rely on it. The basket size guide shows how to measure.
Thickness and headspace
A screen uses some of the headspace between the coffee and the shower screen, and a thicker screen uses more. Some listings offer two thicknesses; the thinner one leaves more room. To check your setup:
- Dose and tamp as usual.
- Add the screen and lock the portafilter in without brewing.
- Take it out and look at the screen. A deep imprint of the shower screen or its screw means there is too little room: lower the dose slightly or choose a thinner screen.
When to skip it
- Your shower screen already stays clean with a quick rinse.
- Your basket is already full at your usual dose.
- You have not yet sorted out distribution and tamping. A screen does not address the causes of uneven shots; a WDT tool and a level tamp do.
Looking after one
Rinse the screen after each session so coffee oils do not dry in the holes, and let it dry before you put it away. Clean it with espresso machine cleaner from time to time, following the cleaner maker's instructions.

Common questions
Does a puck screen stop channeling?
We found no controlled evidence that it does. Channeling starts with uneven grounds and tamping below the screen, so fix distribution first; see what is WDT. More in Are puck screens worth it?
What size puck screen fits a Breville?
About 53.3 mm for the 54 mm machines: Normcore lists a 53.3 mm screen for the Barista Express, Pro, Touch and Bambino models. More in Are puck screens worth it?
What size puck screen fits a 58 mm machine?
Normcore lists 58.5 mm for most 58 mm machines, including the Gaggia Classic, Rancilio Silvia and Breville Dual Boiler. Check that it drops in and lifts out freely in your basket. More in Are puck screens worth it?
Should I lower my dose when I use a puck screen?
Only if you run out of headspace. Lock the portafilter in without brewing and look for a deep shower-screen imprint on the screen; if you see one, reduce the dose slightly. More in Are puck screens worth it?
Thin or thick puck screen?
A thinner screen takes up less headspace. MHW-3BOMBER sells its screen in 0.2 and 0.8 mm versions (the seller's figures). We found no evidence that thickness changes taste. More in Are puck screens worth it?
What size puck screen should I order for a Breville Barista Express?
About 53.3 mm, the size Normcore lists for Breville's 54 mm machines. MHW-3BOMBER's 53.35 mm screen is the closer of our two picks; ALIKISSCAFE's 53.5 mm screen is slightly larger, so check that it drops in freely. More in Best puck screens for 51, 54 and 58 mm baskets
Should I choose a 0.2 mm or a 0.8 mm puck screen?
The 0.2 mm screen takes 0.6 mm less headspace (the seller's figures). Choose it if your dose already sits close to the shower screen; we found no evidence that either thickness extracts better. More in Best puck screens for 51, 54 and 58 mm baskets
Will a 58.5 mm puck screen fit my 58 mm basket?
Normcore lists 58.5 mm screens for many 58 mm machines, but baskets vary: VST and IMS size theirs for tampers of up to 58.4 mm. Check that the screen drops in and lifts out freely. More in Best puck screens for 51, 54 and 58 mm baskets
Questions
What size puck screen fits a Breville Bambino or Barista Express?
Normcore lists a 53.3 mm screen for the Bambino, Bambino Plus and the Barista Express, Pro and Touch. A 53.5 mm screen is slightly larger, so check that it drops in freely before you rely on it.[1]
Does a puck screen stop channeling?
We found no controlled study showing that. Channeling starts with uneven grounds and an uneven tamp, below the screen, which a screen on top does not change. Sort out distribution first.
Do I need to change my dose when I add a puck screen?
Possibly. The screen takes up headspace. If the portafilter becomes harder to lock in, or the screen comes out with a deep imprint of the shower screen, lower the dose slightly or use a thinner screen.
Is a 58.5 mm puck screen right for every 58 mm machine?
Not automatically. Normcore lists 58.5 mm for many 58 mm machines, but VST and IMS size their baskets for tampers of up to 58.4 mm, and Flair's standard basket narrows to 58.5 mm. Check that the screen drops in and lifts out freely.[1][4][5][3]
Is a puck screen the same as a paper filter?
No. A metal puck screen sits on top of the puck and is reused; a paper filter is a disposable disc placed above or below the coffee. We found no controlled study comparing the two.
